This slab was carved with symbols which
had a double meaning: one for the white man, and one for the Shawnees. The
public (white man) interpretation was that this was a guide to going home
to heaven (see house at top). All things on earth were to be experienced
and understood before people could reach their spiritual reward.
The actual meaning, reading from bottom to top, was much more practical to
the Shawnees. That is, that all Native Americans on both sides of
the Mississippi should come in a straight direction with the speed of
lightning, with weapons, leaving behind farming & hunting to unite at
the trembling of the earth. They would then take back their land
from the white man, preferably by peaceable means, or by warfare, if
necessary. (Explanation of all symbols on back of finished piece.) Indigo
